TUFLUBE Extreme: Why lubrication matters in extreme environments

Telescopic equipment operates in some of the most demanding environments found in industry. Whether lifting heavy loads on construction sites, supporting offshore maintenance operations or handling cargo in ports, telescopic boom systems are subjected to high mechanical loads, constant sliding contact and prolonged exposure to water, dirt and corrosive contaminants. Selecting the correct lubricant is therefore essential to maintaining equipment reliability, reducing downtime and extending service life.

Heavy-duty lubrication for equipment operating where failure is not an option.

Unlike conventional bearings or rotating components, telescopic boom sections rely on smooth sliding movement between wear pads and boom surfaces. Under heavy loading, these sliding interfaces experience extremely high contact pressures. If lubrication breaks down, friction increases rapidly, leading to accelerated wear, difficult boom extension, increased energy consumption and, in severe cases, seizure of the telescopic mechanism.

Selecting the correct lubricant is therefore essential to maintaining equipment reliability, reducing downtime and extending service life.

The Challenges of Lubricating Telescopic Equipment

Boom greases must perform far beyond simply reducing friction. They must remain in place under constant movement while continuing to protect metal surfaces exposed to harsh operating conditions.

Some of the most common lubrication challenges include:

Many conventional greases are displaced during operation or washed away by water, leaving metal surfaces unprotected. Once the lubricating film is lost, wear accelerates and damage and corrosion can develop.

For equipment operating offshore or in marine environments, the challenge is even greater. Salt water dramatically increases corrosion rates, while constant exposure to moisture makes lubricant retention particularly difficult.

Introducing TUFLUBE Extreme

ROCOL’s TUFLUBE Extreme has been developed specifically for heavily loaded telescopic mechanisms where conventional greases may struggle to provide long-term protection. While designed for telescopic crane booms, TUFLUBE Extreme is equally suitable for a wide range of heavy-duty sliding and open mechanical systems that require exceptional load carrying capability together with strong resistance to water and corrosion.

Typical applications include:

The grease could also be suitable for numerous industrial applications including open gears, slew rings, tracks, rails, winches, couplings, cantilevers and water treatment equipment.

Engineered for Extreme Loads

One of the primary requirements of a boom grease is its ability to protect surfaces extreme contact pressures. TUFLUBE Extreme delivers outstanding extreme-pressure (EP) performance, achieving a 4-Ball Weld Load of 700 kg when tested in accordance with ASTM D2596.

The ASTM 4-Ball Weld Load test is widely used throughout the lubrication industry to assess the load at which a lubricant can no longer prevent metal-to-metal welding between contacting surfaces. A higher weld load indicates that the lubricant can continue protecting components under greater mechanical stress before failure occurs.

For heavily loaded telescopic mechanisms, this provides an additional level of protection during demanding lifting operations where contact pressures may increase significantly.

Excellent Anti-Wear Performance

While extreme-pressure performance protects components during peak loading, wear protection determines how effectively a lubricant protects equipment throughout its operating life. In ASTM D2266 testing, TUFLUBE Extreme produced a wear scar diameter of 0.57 mm, demonstrating excellent anti-wear characteristics.

A smaller wear scar indicates that the lubricant maintains a protective film between moving surfaces, reducing direct metal contact and minimising progressive wear and reduced wear can offer several operational benefits, including:

Designed to Resist Water and Corrosion

Water contamination is one of the biggest challenges facing crane lubrication.

Rain, washdown procedures and offshore salt spray can gradually remove lubricant from exposed surfaces while simultaneously promoting corrosion beneath the grease film.

TUFLUBE Extreme has been formulated to remain highly adhesive, helping it stay in position even in wet operating conditions. In addition to its water resistance, the grease provides excellent corrosion protection.

EMCOR corrosion testing demonstrated superior performance compared with a leading competing boom grease, while ASTM B117 salt spray testing showed the ability to protect metal surfaces from corrosion after ten days of continuous exposure. For operators working in marine environments, offshore platforms and coastal facilities, this corrosion resistance can contribute significantly to extending equipment service life.

Lubricants that migrate away from heavily loaded contact surfaces provide little long-term protection.

TUFLUBE Extreme has a highly adhesive formulation that allows it to remain where it is needed, maintaining a durable lubricating film between wear pads and boom sections. This adhesion helps reduce lubricant loss during operation and can contribute to longer relubrication intervals, reducing maintenance requirements while ensuring continued protection.

Easy Inspection During Maintenance

Unlike traditional dark greases, TUFLUBE Extreme has a light, off-white appearance.

This offers a practical maintenance advantage by allowing engineers to inspect grease coverage more easily during servicing. Dirt ingress, contamination and lubricant distribution can be identified quickly, helping maintenance teams assess lubrication condition more effectively.

Proven Performance Against a Leading Alternative

ROCOL compared TUFLUBE Extreme with a leading alternative lubricant developed for similar telescopic boom applications. The competing grease tested contains PTFE, a PFAS, while TUFLUBE Extreme is formulated without PFAS containing materials. See “PFAS-Free formulation without compromise” below for more information.

Testing demonstrated several key advantages.

TUFLUBE Extreme achieved a substantially higher 4-Ball Weld Load, indicating greater resistance to failure under extreme loading. It also produced a significantly smaller wear scar, demonstrating superior anti-wear protection during continuous sliding contact.

The grease also showed improved corrosion resistance and lower oil separation, helping maintain product consistency during service.

TUFLUBE Extreme delivered stronger overall performance across the majority of the critical tests most relevant to heavily loaded telescopic equipment.

Flexible Application Methods

Maintenance teams can apply TUFLUBE Extreme using a variety of methods depending on equipment design and maintenance procedures.

Suitable application methods include:

This flexibility allows maintenance engineers to lubricate both internal and external boom surfaces efficiently while ensuring complete coverage of critical wear areas.

PFAS-Free formulation without compromise.

TUFLUBE Extreme is formulated without any intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This is increasingly important as regulators around the world continue to scrutinise PFAS due to their persistence in the environment and the challenges associated with their disposal. Often referred to as “forever chemicals”, many PFAS compounds do not readily break down and can accumulate in soil, water and living organisms over time.

By selecting a PFAS-free lubricant, maintenance teams can help support their organisation’s environmental objectives while reducing the risk of future compliance issues as regulations evolve. Choosing a high-performance grease that delivers exceptional load-carrying capability, wear protection and corrosion resistance without relying on PFAS-containing ingredients provides confidence that equipment can be protected today without creating unnecessary environmental liabilities for the future.

More Than a Boom Grease

Although developed primarily for telescopic cranes, TUFLUBE Extreme could be equally suited to other heavily loaded industrial mechanisms where high loads, sliding contact and exposure to water present ongoing lubrication challenges.

These include:

This versatility enables maintenance teams to standardise lubrication across multiple assets while maintaining excellent protection in demanding environments.

Summary: Reliable Protection in Demanding Conditions

Effective lubrication plays a critical role in maintaining the reliability and longevity of telescopic equipment.

By combining high load carrying capability, excellent anti-wear performance, strong adhesion and outstanding corrosion protection, TUFLUBE Extreme helps reduce friction, minimise component wear and support smoother operation in some of the industry’s harshest environments.

Whether operating on construction sites, in ports or on offshore installations, selecting a lubricant designed specifically for telescopic mechanisms can help reduce downtime, extend maintenance intervals and maximise equipment availability throughout its service life.
